AppleSox Add Trio from California Schools

Posted by admin in Untagged

USF_and_Cal_Poly-1Three schools from “The Golden State” will provide the AppleSox players for the 2012 season. Cal Poly infielder Ryan Drobny, University of San Francisco catcher Tyler Schultz, and Glendale Community College pitcher Kirk Edson will join the AppleSox this summer.

As only a freshman Drobny was the starting first baseman on opening day for the Mustangs. The left-handed hitter from Danville, Calif., earned first team All-East Bay Athletic League honors after his senior year at San Ramon Valley High School.

“This summer he projects to play first base for us, but he is really versatile. He can play both corner infield positions and even in the outfield,” said AppleSox head coach Ed Knaggs.

It will be the first time since the 2008 season that the AppleSox have had a University of San Francisco player on the roster. Schultz, a Lakewood, Calif. native, was an accomplished two-sport athlete in high school. Not only was he named first team All-League three consecutive years for his work on the diamond, but was named league MVP as a quarterback at Lakewood High School.

“He is a left-handed hitting catcher, which is always nice. He comes from a phenomenal high school program and has a chance to be the catcher of the future for the University of San Francisco,” said Knaggs.

Edson, from Arcadia, Calif., is committed to transfer from Glendale Community College to the University of San Francisco. The freshman reliever has five saves and has yet to give up a run in over nine innings of work this spring.

“He is closing games for his community college and that is a role that he could potentially fill for us this summer,” said Knaggs.

The AppleSox open the 2012 season on the road against the Bellingham Bells on June 1st. The team will return to Paul Thomas Sr. Field to start a six-game homestand beginning with the home opener on June 5th against the Bend Elks.
