Ames Named Preseason All-American PDF Print E-mail

Jeff_Ames-Baseball_AmericaFollowing an outstanding freshman season and a dominating summer with the AppleSox, Jeff Ames has been named a junior college Preseason All-American by Baseball America. Ames was also listed by the magazine as the #12 junior college prospect in the country.

Ames flourished with the AppleSox in 2010 when he converted to the closer role in early July. He ended the season with nine saves, including three in the playoffs. He did not allow a run in league play throughout July and August.

He was previously recognized by Baseball America in the fall when he was named the #3 prospect in the West Coast League. He was the only relief pitcher to earn All-WCL First Team honors.

The sophomore was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 30th round of the 2010 MLB Draft, but elected to return to Lower Columbia College and work with AppleSox and LCC pitching coach Rob Hippi for another season.

AppleSox Hire Winston as Assistant Coach PDF Print E-mail

Sean_Winston_Graphic_2The Wenatchee AppleSox have put the finishing touches on their 2011 coaching staff by hiring Sean Winston as an assistant coach. Winston comes from Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Ariz., where he is in his first year as an assistant coach.

“He fits the mold for the position,” said AppleSox head coach Ed Knaggs. “He is a young aspiring coach who isn’t afraid to work.”

No stranger to the West Coast League, Winston played against the AppleSox as a member of the Spokane RiverHawks in 2009.

“The Wenatchee fans were always fun to play in front of when I visited as a player,” said Winston. “This is a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to this summer.”

The Richland, Wash., native attended Richland High School and helped the Bombers capture the 2005 4A State Championship. He went on to play at Lower Columbia College under AppleSox pitching coach Rob Hippi for two years before transferring to Hawaii Pacific University. He was named first-team All-Pac West after his junior and senior seasons with the Sea Warriors.

“I’m excited to have a guy who knows about the AppleSox, having played in our league and being from the area,” said Knaggs. “I remember him being a thorn in our side as a player, so it will be nice to have him on our team.”

Winston will be taking over for last year’s popular assistant Fletcher Vynne, who joined the military in September. Vynne recently graduated from Officer Candidate School for the Navy and is about to begin flight school in Florida.

“When I played in Wenatchee for the RiverHawks I remember the fans cheering for the first base coach before every inning,” said Winston. “They loved it when he hustled over to the first base coaching box and it created a great atmosphere.”

Responsibilities for Winston will include hitting coach, first base coach, and scouting.

The addition of Winston completes the AppleSox 2011 coaching staff, with WCL Coach of the Year Ed Knaggs returning for his eleventh season and pitching coach Rob Hippi back for his sixth season.

Three AppleSox Named to WCL Top 10 Prospect List PDF Print E-mail

Baseball_America_RankingsThree key members of the 2010 Wenatchee AppleSox are among the West Coast League’s top prospects according to Baseball America. The national magazine released their annual top 10 prospects for the WCL and the AppleSox led the league with the most players named to the list. AppleSox players Jeff Ames, Marco Gonzales, and Collin Bennett all earned a spot in the rankings.

Closer Jeff Ames ranked the highest of any Wenatchee player as the No. 3 prospect in the league. The sophomore from Lower Columbia College was the only relief pitcher named to the All-WCL First Team. Ames converted to the closer role in early July and ended the season with nine saves, including three in the playoffs. He did not allow a run in league play in July and August.

Starting pitcher Marco Gonzales is the No. 6 prospect in the WCL. Gonzales came to the AppleSox straight out of Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, CO. He led the West Coast League with 66 strikeouts and finished the regular season with a 5-1 record and a 2.77 ERA. He was drafted by his hometown Colorado Rockies in the 29th round of 2010 MLB Draft, but did not sign and is entering his freshman year at Gonzaga.

Outfielder Collin Bennett was the final AppleSox player to make the list as the No. 9 prospect. Bennett is entering his junior year at the University of Hawaii. He had a .309 batting average with 29 RBI, 18 runs, 12 doubles, two triples and two home runs with the AppleSox this summer.

In addition to the three players from the 2010 team that made the list, three former AppleSox players earned recognition in Baseball America’s rankings. Royce Bolinger, who played for the AppleSox in 2009, was named the No. 7 prospect in the WCL. Bolinger played for the Kelowna Falcons this summer but had his season cut short due to an injury. Former AppleSox pitcher Chad Smith (2008) and infielder D.J. Crumlich (2009) were also named to the Alaska League’s top 10 prospects list.

AppleSox Skipper Earns Coach of the Year Award PDF Print E-mail

Knaggs_Coach_of_the_YearFresh off of leading Wenatchee to their second straight West Coast League Championship, AppleSox head coach Ed Knaggs has been named the WCL Coach of the Year.

It is the second consecutive year Knaggs has earned the honor, after being named co-Coach of the Year in 2009. He also received the award in 2005.

“An award like this is a reflection of the players we had here in Wenatchee this summer,” said Knaggs. “It says a lot about Wenatchee and the special situation we have.”

Knaggs, who is considered the dean of WCL coaches, just completed his 10th season with the team. During his tenure he has coached 525 games for the AppleSox with a 339-186 record. He has guided Wenatchee to four WCL Championships in the last six seasons.

In addition to Coach of the Year, league president Ken Wilson announced the winners of all the WCL’s annual awards. Bend Elks second baseman Tommy Richards was named the 2010 West Coast League Most Valuable Player. Richards (soph-to-be, Washington State) led the league in batting with a .364 average, hit 2 home runs and collected 33 RBI.

Southpaw Dayne Quist of the Kelowna Falcons was the league pick for West Coast League Pitcher of the Year.  Quist (jr-to-be, UC Davis) led the WCL with a 1.40 ERA and tied for the league lead in wins with 6.  Over 51 1/3 innings, he fanned 50, walked only 18, and went 6-1.

The Moses Lake Pirates are back-to-back recipients of the Jim Dietz Sportsmanship Award. The Pirates, who also won the award last summer, were one of the most improved teams from a season ago.
