Sweets End AppleSox Season with a 5-4 Loss PDF Print E-mail

2011_Playoffs_Pic_2A very promising, record-breaking AppleSox 2011 season was ended Saturday night in Wenatchee after a heartbreaking loss against the Walla Walla Sweets.

The Sweets swept the series against the AppleSox winning first in Walla Walla Friday night and then taking the win in Wenatchee 5-4 Saturday night.

What started off as a methodical pitching duel was broken wide open by the AppleSox in the fourth. The Sox scored four runs in the inning which was extended by a costly error at shortstop.

The Sweets cut that lead in half at the top of the sixth with a two RBI double for Walla Walla catcher Austin Heaps. But starting pitcher and AppleSox veteran Owen Jones kept the AppleSox lead until the eighth inning an impressive pitching performance.

But Jones couldn't keep the Sweets' bats silent and in the eighth inning they scored three more runs to put them ahead 5-4. The Sox battled back, putting a few runners on base, but couldn't score another run and the ninth inning came and went and the score remained. The AppleSox season comes to an end with the loss. The Sweets on the other hand will advance to the WCL Championship Series and play the winner of the Corvallis/Bend series.

A big thank you to all the fans, sponsors, coaches, and players for another great season of AppleSox baseball!
