Stuka's Five Hits Not Enough vs Elks
/The Wenatchee AppleSox and Bend Elks combined to score 29 runs Friday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium but it was the visiting team who picked up the 17-12 win in front of 1,588 fans.
Luc Stuka led the way for the AppleSox with a 5-for-6 performance for the first 5-hit effort by the AppleSox this summer and their first since Nick Nyquist collected five against the Victoria HarbourCats on Aug. 2, 2015. He singled in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings before doubling in eighth. The incoming junior at Cal State Northridge also drove in five runs in the losing cause. He extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his huge night.
The AppleSox lost despite outhitting the Elks and Bend committing eight errors. Wenatchee led 4-3 after one inning but never did again after allowing five runs in the top of the second.
The true turning point of the game came with the AppleSox batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third trailing 8-5. Enzo Apodaca popped out to third after three straight hitters had reached with two outs and the Elks went on to score five runs over the next two innings before Wenatchee struck again but they never got as close to the three-run deficit again.
