The Wenatchee AppleSox play three non-WCL games this weekend, starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m. vs. the San Francisco Seals.

Friday’s contest with the San Francisco Seals is the first of six non-league contests for the Sox in 2016...Wenatchee will also host the Alaska Goldpanners July 29-31, famous for playing the ‘Midnight Sun Game’ in Fairbanks Alaska...Wenatchee went 3-1 in non-league matchups in 2015...the only loss coming to these very Seals in the second game of the year...Wenatchee holds a 107-40 mark all-time in non-league action, including games played when the team was a PIL franchise from 2000-2004. 

FRESHMAN POWER
With Jeremy Ydens’ home run to left field a night ago, Wenatchee has received its first three home runs of 2016 from true-freshman hitters...Michael Toglia and Haydan Hastings each went deep in Wednesday’s extra-inning win.

DEFENSE REELING
A lone black mark on a good report card over the last week for the Sox has been defensively...Wenatchee has committed at least one error in 10 of its first 12 games. 

BLATNER TRYING TO GET TEAM BACK ON TRACK
If you look back to last Saturday’s game with Corvallis, Justin Blatner was the man that got the Sox going for a four-game winning streak...he turned in Wenatchee’s first quality start of the season, following his first spring at Gonzaga...the sophomore is holding opposing hitters to a .238 average. 

LEFT-HANDERS GIVING OPPONENTS FITS
Wenatchee’s left-handed pitching has been a point of strength in 2016...opposing batters are batting just .218 off of lefties, as opposed to a .309 average against right-handed pitching. 

RATHBONE COMING ON
Jordan Rathbone has tallied a team-leading 6 hits over the last five games...has also driven in a team-leading 4 RBI over the same stretch...he has the second-highest batting average in the last five games of any player with more than two games played.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO SEALS
In their 30th season of summer baseball, the Seals home field is not in the city for which they are named...their diamond is in Alameda...,ore formerly the team was the San Francisco Bay Area Collegiate Baseball Club...now they are merging their brand with the Alameda Merchants...because of split-squad games, multiple doubleheaders and all of the travel, the Seals have 45 players on the roster...outside of the Golden State there are games in Washington, Nevada, Alaska and British Columbia...they are coming from Alameda to Wenatchee and returning right home according to their schedule...the team is a “pay to play” outfit, with each player paying for membership.

APPLESOX FALL 8-4, WIN SERIES VERSUS SWEETS

The AppleSox fell 8-4 Thursday night, but won their second-consecutive series during a nine-game homestand at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

BOX SCORE

WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox (4-8), fell 8-4 to the Walla Walla Sweets (6-6), in the series finale, Thursday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. Wenatchee won the three-game series 2-1. 

AppleSox starter Luke Mattson (0-2) was hit hard in the second inning by the Sweets, walking three batters and giving up two hits for the Sweets first runs of the night. A wild pitch surrendered the first run, while an RBI single for Ryan Johnston plated the second on an RBI single. 

Struggling with command, Mattson allowed an additional run in the fifth inning and left two runners aboard when he exited with two outs in the frame, after an RBI single for Nick Vigo. Casey Legumina entered in relief and the two runners scored on a 2-RBI single for Austin Kopacz. 

Walla Walla went on to add a run in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Nick Nyquist, the Sweets leading hitter and a former AppleSox player came up with an RBI single in the sixth and a 2-RBI triple in the eighth off of Taylor Borchers, making his AppleSox debut. 

In the seventh, an RBI double led to another run for the Sweets. Catcher Griffin Mazur had the third extra-base hit of the game for Walla Walla. 

Wenatchee tried to make a game of it in the late innings. With one out, Jeremy Ydens delivered a solo home run off of Walla Walla reliever Joe Heineman. He was working to back up six scoreless innings from Easton Lucas (2-0). 

It was Ydens’ first home run of 2016 and the Sox third home run of the season. Parker Price, Ryan Kreidler, and Michael Toglia each walked after the home run and with two outs, Matt Reitano walked with the bases loaded to score Wenatchee’s second run. 

Jordan Rathbone followed up with a 2-RBI single to cut the defecit to 8-4. The score held the rest of the way, as Nick Vigo came out of center field to pitch in the ninth for Walla Walla. 

Wenatchee will play three non-league games Friday-Sunday against the San Francisco Seals. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. 

Wenatchee Going For First Sweep, Thursday

WENATCHEE – It took extra innings, Wednesday night, but the Wenatchee AppleSox (4-7), won a fourth-straight game on a Parker Price RBI single in the 12th inning, to secure a 5-4 win over the Walla Walla Sweets (5-6), at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium...Eli Thornquist (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the AppleSox, posting three innings of relief for the AppleSox in extra innings...the loss was charged to Kyle Narahara (0-2), the West Coast League’s save leader...Wenatchee fell behind in the fourth inning, as the Sweets reached Sox starter Jimmy Dobrash for their first runs for a 2-0 lead....that score held into the bottom half as Walla Walla starter Bobby Ay was facing Toglia without allowing a hit to Wenatchee on the night...that’s when Toglia hammered his two-run home run to dead center field to tie the ballgame...trailing in the sixth, Wenatchee cut into the two-run, 4-2 deficit with Toglia’s third RBI...he landed a single in shallow right field to score Price, who was aboard earlier in the inning on a walk...Hastings hit the game-tying solo home run down the right field line off of AJ Carkner in the seventh...the score would hold until Price broke the tie for good in the 12th...with two outs, and Narahara in a groove, Jeremy Ydens walked to get a runner aboard...after stealing second base, Price delivered the single that won the game for Wenatchee.

THE STREAK
The AppleSox have now won 4-consecutive games, tied for the second-longest WCL winning streak...it is the AppleSox longest positive streak since a five-game stretch in August, 2014...all of the wins have occurred at home. 

CRUSHED
Two home runs tied the game twice a night ago for the AppleSox...the team’s first of the year was crushed to center field off the batt of Michael Toglia...it came in the fourth to tie the game 2-2...Haydan Hastings provided another in the seventh...a solo shot after Jordan Rathbone was caught trying to stretch a single into a double...that tied the game at 4...the home run came in game number 11 last night...a year ago, it took 13 games and change for the Sox to put one over the wall...the long is 15 games back in 2007.

The recent history of the Sox-Sweets history has delivered plenty of close games...now 8 of the last 12 games with Walla Walla have been decided by one run.

Last night, the AppleSox played their second extra inning contest of the season...Wenatchee is now 1-1 on the year, and has drawn even with the Sweets at 4-4 all-time in extra-inning games...the win last night broke a 5-game losing streak in extra-inning contests, dating back to June 10, 2015, a 10-inning 3-0 win at Walla Walla, after the game was scoreless into extra frames...Wenatchee played back-to-back extra-inning games to end that first series with Walla Walla a season ago (1-1)...the Sox are 35-30 in lengthened games, and 16-18 at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. 

PITCHING LEADING THE CHARGE
Over the last five game nights, and the AppleSox 4-game winning streak, the pitching staff has had a heavy hand in changing Wenatchee’s fortunes...in the last five games, the team has tossed a 2.06 ERA, allowing 11 earned runs...if you take only the games during the four-game win-streak, it is a 1.38 ERA for the staff (6 earned runs)...in the series against Walla Walla, just four earned runs have been allowed (1.71 ERA).

PREP THE BROOM CLOSET
Wenatchee has a chance to get a sweep over the Walla Walla Sweets, Thursday...the last AppleSox sweep came July 3-5, 2015 at home against the Klamath Falls Gems...the last sweep versus a divisional opponent was Aug. 5-7, 2014 at Kelowna...the final two games of that series both went to extra innings.

APPLESOX WALK OFF SWEETS, EARN FOURTH-STRAIGHT WIN

Parker Price delivered a game-winning RBI single for the AppleSox in the 12th inning, Wednesday night. Wenatchee walked off the Sweets to win the game 5-4.

BOX SCORE

WENATCHEE – It took extra innings, Wednesday night, but the Wenatchee AppleSox (4-7), won a fourth-straight game on a Parker Price RBI single in the 12th inning, to secure a 5-4 win over the Walla Walla Sweets (5-6), at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. 

Price ended the night 1-for-4 with two runs scored. He was brought home on two of Michael Toglia’s three RBI in the game-two win. Toglia launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning, tying what was a 2-0 game. 

Haydan Hastings also hit a home run for the AppleSox; a solo shot in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. 

Eli Thornquist (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the AppleSox, posting three innings of relief for the AppleSox in extra innings. He struck out six batters, leading a pitching staff that sent down 13 Sweet batters on strikes. 

The loss was charged to Kyle Narahara (0-2), the West Coast League’s save leader. He struck out seven AppleSox batters, but Wenatchee waited him out for the game-winning single in the 12th. 

Wenatchee fell behind in the fourth inning, as the Sweets reached Sox starter Jimmy Dobrash for their first runs. A leadoff triple for Jarren Duran, set up an RBI on an error at second base; the first of four errors on the night for the AppleSox. 

An RBI single for Clayten Ayers later in the inning made it 2-0 Sweets. That score held into the bottom half as Walla Walla starter Bobby Ay was facing Toglia without allowing a hit to Wenatchee on the night. That’s when Toglia hammered his two-run home run to dead center field to tie the ballgame. 

In the sixth inning, Nick Nyquist helped get the Sweets back on top. He and Ayers singled to start the frame, and both runners advanced on a balk. Facing reliever Dylan Riddle, Hunter Villanueva delivered a sacrifice fly RBI for a 3-2 lead, followed by an RBI single for Haydan Duer. 

Wenatchee cut into the two-run, 4-2 deficit in the bottom half of the inning on Toglia’s third RBI. He landed a single in shallow right field to score Price, who was aboard earlier in the inning on a walk. 

Hastings hit the game-tying solo home run down the right field line off of AJ Carkner in the seventh. The score would hold until Price broke the tie for good in the 12th.

Last night, Jordan Rathbone looked like the 2015 Jordan, netting his first multi-hit game of 2016...he tallied five multi-hit games in 12 games at the plate in 2015...including 2-for-4 nights in each of the last three games of the year, played at Yakima Valley...Rathbone’s triple last night was the first of his collegiate career.

In each of Jimmy Dobrash’s first two starts, the AppleSox fell victim to run-scoring third innings...in the season opener against Yakima Valley it was a 3-run third, and at Victoria June 8, it was a 6-run inning.

APPLESOX PITCHING SHINES, OFFENSE DELIVERS IN TUESDAY'S WIN

Jordan Rathbone backed a strong pitching outing for the Wenatchee AppleSox, Tuesday night in a 5-1 win. Rathbone finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI. 

BOX SCORE

WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox (3-7), won a third-straight game behind stellar pitching and a breakout performance for Jordan Rathbone in a 5- 1 win over the Walla Walla Sweets (5-5), Tuesday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. 

Rathbone finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI, in his first multi-hit game of the season. He backed a stellar combined performance on the mound for Matt Young (1-0) and Ross Clevenger (1 SV), in which the duo only allowed 4 hits. Clevenger didn’t allow a hit in four innings of work. 

The four hits allowed are the fewest to an opponent in 2016, and the lowest total allowed dating to July 5, 2015 in a victory at home against the Klamath Falls Gems. 

Wenatchee opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases on Walla Walla starter Connor Cannon (0-1), with one out. Otis Statum walked on four pitches for Wenatchee to force home the game’s first run. It was Statum’s first RBI of 2016. 

In the third, Walla Walla answered with an RBI triple from Ryan Johnston, but the tie was short-lived, as Wenatchee broke the 1-1 score in the bottom half of the frame when Matt Fraizer scored from third on a balk. 

It was the second of two runs scored on the night for Fraizer, who was plated on the Statum walk in the first. 

Wenatchee added to its lead in the sixth inning, facing Zach Weisz. He was one of three Walla Walla outfielders called on to pitch in relief, Tuesday. 

Rathbone brought home Michael Toglia with an RBI single to make it 3-1, AppleSox. Toglia was aboard on a double off the center field wall in his debut. 

In the eighth, Wenatchee got two more runs off of Ryan Johnston. With one out, Ryan Murkle singled, setting up a run scoring play on a Jordan Rathbone RBI triple. It was Rathbone’s first extra-base hit of 2016, and it placed the AppleSox ahead 4-1. 

Haydan Hastings followed it up with a double down the left field line to give Wenatchee it’s 5-1 final score. 

All of the added runs came in support of reliever Ross Clevenger, who earned his first save of the season, offering four innings of no-hit baseball. He and Young each struck out five Sweet hitters in the winning effort. 

After starting the season 0-7, Wenatchee is now riding a 3-game winning streak. The AppleSox have outscored opponents 14-4 over the last three nights. 

Game two of the series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, Wednesday night. Jimmy Dobrash (0-2) will look for his first win, up against Walla Walla’s Bobby Ay, who is making his 2016 WCL debut.

SUNDAY’S SHUTOUT
Wenatchee shut out the Corvallis Knights, 3-0 Sunday night...it was the AppleSox first shutout since July 4, 2015 at home against the Klamath Falls Gems.

QUALITY STARTS
After going 0-7 without a quality start to begin 2016, Wenatchee came back with back-to-back quality starts from Justin Blatner and Grady Miller to win the weekend set over Corvallis, 2-1. 

THE LAST TIME...
Before last weekend, the AppleSox previous sereis win was Aug. 4-6, 2015 (2-1) over the Walla Walla Sweets. 

FROM BULLPEN TO ROTATION
Matt Young will move from the AppleSox bullpen to a starting role Tuesday night...the move is fitting as Young has the longest relief appearance for the AppleSox on the year (5.0 innings), and the most strikeouts in a relief appearance (8)...this will be his third game for Wenatchee in 2016. 

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A SERIES MAKES
The AppleSox are hitting .204 on the year with a 5.70 ERA, but over the weekend against Corvallis, the Sox hit .278 (25x90) with a 2.33 ERA (7 ER, 27.0 IP)...Haydan Hastings and Parker Price were the team’s offensive leaders, slugging .667 and .636 respectively.

18 AppleSox Taken In MLB Draft; Most in WCL

Brandon Bailey of the 2014 AppleSox was selected in the 6th Round of the June MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. All told, 18 AppleSox players were picked last weekend; most in the WCL. 

WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox had 18 current, former, or future players taken in last weekend’s 2016 MLB Draft, June 9-11. The 18 players selected was the highest mark of any WCL team. As a league, the WCL turned out 83 draft picks; a league record. 

The AppleSox draft picks were highlighted by right-handed pitcher Brandon Bailey, who pitched for Wenatchee in 2014. He was the first former or current AppleSox player off the board, and went to Oakland in the sixth round, Saturday. 

Other notable selections were Taylor Jones (Rd. 19, Houston Astros), Eric Filia (Rd. 20, Seattle Mariners), and Hunter Wells (Rd. 23, Miami).

In total, 8 current AppleSox players were selected in the draft. Current reliever Casey Legumina led off that charge with a 25th round selection to the Toronto Blue Jays.

MILLER LEADS APPLESOX TO SHUTOUT, SERIES WIN

Grady Miller threw seven shutout innings Sunday, as the AppleSox held off a late Corvallis rally to earn a 3-0 win, and take the series at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Miller (1-1) threw seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts and no walks, while allowing just five hits.. He retired the Knights in order in three of the first four innings. At one point, he had retired 9-straight batters before Corvallis catcher Zak Taylor hit a two-out double in the fifth. 

Wenatchee scored its first run in the second inning off of Corvallis starter Aaron Pope (0-2). Sheldon Liikala knocked an RBI single into left center field in the second inning, which scored Matt Reitano who led off hit by a pitch. Kolby DeHaas advanced him on a walk. 

The AppleSox offense was also held in check through the first six innings, coming up with just two hits off of Pope and Knight reliever Tanner Howell. 

Wenatchee did add a run off of Howell in the seventh on a sacrifice fly RBI for Jeremy Ydens. It scored DeHaas, who led off the frame with a single. Liikala was tossed out at third to end the inning, just after DeHaas crossed the plate.

Wenatchee got one more insurance run in the eighth inning for reliever Nick Hoefling. He retired the Knights in the order in the top half of the frame. 

Parker Price doubled to start the home half, and was brought home in the next at bat on an RBI single for Evan Douglas. The RBI was Douglas’ first of the season. 

In the ninth, Corvallis made things interesting, loading the bases on three-conseuctive one-out singles. Hoefling ended the threat and picked up his first save by striking out the next two batters to secure the series victory. 

Wenatchee will have an off day Monday, before continuing its nine-game homestand Tuesday-Thursday against the Walla Walla Sweets. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

LAST NIGHT’S SIXTH INNING
Wenatchee scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning last night...the six runs in the inning were more than the team’s total scored in each of the first seven games of 2016...the five hits all came in succession, with two-outs...Wenatchee struck for five two-out runs after Evan Douglas and Matt Frazier each sacrificed to help Wenatchee to its first run of the night...Wenatchee also brought 10 batters to the plate in the frame, marking the second time that the AppleSox batted around this season, and the fist time that they brought more than 9 hitters to the plate.

Over the last three games, Sox freshman Haydan Hastings is batting .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, three RBI, two runs scored and a walk...no other AppleSox hitter has been as potent over the three-game stretch.

Wenatchee Wins First, Bats Ignite in Sixth

WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox (1-7), scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Saturday night, to pick up their first win of 2016 against the Corvallis Knights (4-4), at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. 

Five of the six runs scored in the sixth inning came with two outs, and five were scored on two extra-base hits. 

Trailing 1-0, the bottom of the sixth inning started with Jeremy Ydens being hit by a pitch. He stole second base before Parker Price walked to put two on with nobody out. Evan Douglas followed with a sacrifice bunt to put both runners into scoring position.

Corvallis starter Chris Carns (0-2), was lifted at that point, and the Knights turned to Cameron Richman, who got the final out in Friday’s game. In a re-match at bat against Matt Fraizer, the Sox earned a sac-fly RBI to tie the contest up.

Wenatchee went on to get five-consecutive hits and score five two-out runs after the sac fly. Matt Reitano opened the onslaught with an RBI triple to left center field. Price scored on the play. 

An RBI single for Steven Machtolf brought home Reitano, followed by singles for Jordan Rathbone and Ryan Murkle to load the bases. Haydan Hastings doubled down the left field line to empty the bases, earning Wenatchee’s first bases loaded hit of the season.

The future Gonzaga Bulldog retired Corvallis in order in the seventh, before allowing two runs in the eighth (one unearned on an error). Reitano finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hastings was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI. Fraizer and Machtolf drove in the other two Wenatchee runs. 

Game three and a chance for a series win comes Sunday night, when left-hander Grady Miller (0-1), takes to the mound for Wenatchee. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.

GOOD DEBUTS LAST NIGHT
Matt Frazier, Matt Reitano, and Eli Thornquist each made their AppleSox debuts Friday night...Frazier went 3-for-5, Reitano was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Thornquist threw two innings of hitless baseball with four strikeouts and one walk.

APPLESOX GOING FOR WCL WIN #350
If the AppleSox win Thursday night, it will be West Coast League win number 350 for the squad.

BATS AWAKENING
Wenatchee tallied 12 hits last night in the club’s first double-digit hit effort of the season...Wenatchee also out-hit an opponent for the first time this year, tallying 12 to Corvallis’ 11. 

THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Through seven games, Parker Price has hit two triples for Wenatchee...last night his triple to the right field fence went for 2 RBI...there have been nine triples hit in the WCL this season. 

TRYING TO AVOID HISTORY

Wenatchee and Corvallis meet on Friday night, as the two winningest franchises in WCL history...their head-to-head records date back to the teams’ PIL days, and this duo has met for times in the WCL Championship series...the programs are tied with 9 playoff appearances each, while Corvallis has won 8 division titles, and Wenatchee, 6...the AppleSox own five championships, while Corvallis has won three...Corvallis has been runner-up four times, and Wenatchee twice...at least one of the two teams held a spot in the WCL Championship series from 2005 to 2014...the streak ending last year when Bend faced Kelowna for the title...Wenatchee and Corvallis also had turned out the most MLB talent, with the Knights claiming 15 major leaguers and the AppleSox with nine, heading into the 2016 spring.

2014 Wenatchee AppleSox arm, Brandon Bailey, was selected by the Oakland Athletics today in the 6th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Last year Chris Carns threw for the AppleSox and his season was cut short when he was hit with a foul ball line drive in the Wenatchee dugout during at start at Cowlitz...Carns was 1-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 5 starts for Wenatchee.

WENATCHEE WAKES UP BATS LATE, FALLS 7-5

The Corvallis Knights scored Friday's first seven runs, and Wenatchee rallied for five in the final three innings, but fell short at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox (0-7), scored five runs late in Friday’s game against the Corvallis Knights (4-3), but fell 7-5 with the tying run on base at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. 

Wenatchee out-hit an opponent for the first time in 2016 last night, scoring five runs in the final three innings, but the rally fell just short. 

Kyle Blankenship (0-2), got the start for Wenatchee and the AppleSox were in trouble in the top of the first after two errors on the same play led to two Corvallis runs. The Knights added on two more runs in the third inning on an RBI groundout for Andrew Reichenbach and an RBI single for Andy Atwood. 

Adam Taylor and Taylor Travess scored twice in the first three innings. They combined to go 7-for-9, and Taylor went 4-4 with a walk. 

Another run crossed in the fourth inning for Corvallis in the fourth on an RBI single for Taylor. Zak Taylor scored on the play after being aboard earlier in the inning with a walk. 

In the fifth inning, Blankenship loaded the bases and Roman Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Hawken. It came off of Miceal Taylor who pitched first in relief for Wenatchee, but was charged to Blankenship. 

Taylor allowed a Corvallis home run in the seventh inning to Andy Atwood, extending their WCL lead with four home runs. 

Wenatchee had trouble getting to Knight starter Trenton Dupre (1-0), who threw six shutout innings, only allowing five hits. 

Three of those hits went to Matt Frazier in his AppleSox debut, and Wenatchee scored its first runs on a 2-RBI single for Sheldon Liikala with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to score Steven Machtolf and Haydan Hastings, who also had a three-hit night. 

The runs came off of Cody Hoff, Corvallis’ first reliever. Brandon Cutsworth pitched a scoreless eighth inning before things got dicey in the ninth. 

With one out, Hastings doubled, and Matt Reitano followed with his first AppleSox hit, in his team debut. Hastings scored on an error in left field. Two batters later, Parker Price recorded his second triple of the season, for 2 RBI, cutting the Knight lead to 7-5. Evan Douglas followed with a walk to put the tying run on base. 

Cameron Richman was called out of the bullpen to get the save for Corvallis and caught Frazier looking on a 1-2 fastball to end the game. 

The second game of the series is Saturday night, and Wenatchee will throw left-hander Justin Blatner for the first time this season. He faces off against former AppleSox hurler, Chris Carns (0-1). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

FIRST LEAD
Wenatchee claimed lead number one in WCL play last night, on a run-scoring E6 in the first inning that brought home Jeremy Ydens. 

ACTIVE ON BASE PATHS
Wenatchee stole three bases on Thursday night...two were credited to Ydens who moved two bases in the second on a double steal, which set up two runs to score on an E3 in the inning. 

STORIED FRANCHISES
Wenatchee and Corvallis meet on Friday night, as the two winningest franchises in WCL history...their head-to-head records date back to the teams’ PIL days, and this duo has met for times in the WCL Championship series...the programs are tied with 9 playoff appearances each, while Corvallis has won 8 division titles, and Wenatchee, 6...the AppleSox own five championships, while Corvallis has won three...Corvallis has been runner-up four times, and Wenatchee twice...at least one of the two teams held a spot in the WCL Championship series from 2005 to 2014...the streak ending last year when Bend faced Kelowna for the title...Wenatchee and Corvallis also had turned out the most MLB talent, with the Knights claiming 15 major leaguers and the AppleSox with nine, heading into the 2016 spring. 

LONGEST OUTING
Wenatchee received it’s longest outing from a starter, Thursday night...Luke Mattson went six innings, scattering five runs, in the first loss of his 2016 season...the youngster showcased good command and a relaxed demeanor on the hill for the AppleSox.

SIX-STRAIGHT LOSSES
Wenatchee’s six-game losing streak is the team’s longest since a five-game skid July 6-11 last season...that stretch was also the last time the AppleSox lost back-to-back series...it is their longest losing streak in WCL play dating to 2005. 

BAILEY DRAFTED
2014 Wenatchee AppleSox arm, Brandon Bailey, was selected by the Oakland Athletics today in the 6th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft. 

APPLESOX SWEPT BY HARBOURCATS

The Wenatchee AppleSox fell 6-4 to the Victoria HarbourCats Thursday night. Wenatchee fell to 0-6 on the season.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom half of the first inning by Luke Mattson, who was making his AppleSox debut, Wenatchee added two more in the top of the second. Ryan Murkle, who singled, and Jordan Rathbone, who walked each scored on an error at first base by Matt Warkentin. 

The 3-0 advantage was cut in the home half, when Warkentin deposited a solo home run over the wall in left center field. The HarbourCats evened the score in the fourth on a 2-RBI double from Dakota Dean. 

Mattson was poised in his AppleSox debut, and the Sox got him back a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout for Steven Machtolf. APPLESOX FALL IN SERIES LOSS TO HARBOURCATS

The Wenatchee AppleSox fell 12-4 in a decisive game two of a three-game series in Victoria, Wednesday. 

BOX SCORE

VICTORIA – The Wenatchee AppleSox (0-5), lost their second-consecutive series to open 2016 to the Victoria HarbourCats (2-3), in a 12-4 contest Wednesday night, at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, B.C. 

AppleSox starter Jimmy Dobrash retired all six batters who faced him in the first two innings, Wednesday. 

He allowed six runs in the third inning, and faced 11 HarbourCat batters. The inning started off with a walk, followed by two doubles, a single, and another double. A sacrifice fly, a walk, and two errors (one on a failed pickoff attempt, and another on a failed caught stealing attempt), led to the onslaught of runs in the frame.

Victoria went on to add two nore runs in the ninth off of Young. An RBI single for PJ Floyd and a second error by Wenatchee’s third baseman led to a 12-4 defecit. 

Wenatchee committed a season-high six errors in the game, and with the loss, is guaraunteed to lose back-to-back series for the first time since July 6-11, 2015. 

The final game of the series will be played Thursday night at Royal Athletic Park. Luke Mattson will start for Wenatchee across from James Kannenberg for Victoria.

DOBRASH LOOKING TO IMPROVE ON SEASON-OPENING START
Jimmy Dobrash opened his first start for the Wenatchee AppleSox on Opening Night by retiring six of the first seven batters he faced...in the third inning he ran into some trouble, allowing three runs on three of his six hits allowed that evening...Dobrash recovered to throw a scoreless 2 2/3 inning after the Pippins struck for three, but he did run his pitch count to 94...all three of his walks came in the fourth/fifth innings...Dobrash struck out six of the first eight men he faced, Friday, and faces a Victoria team tonight that struck out 12 times a night ago...12 marked the highest strikeout total for the AppleSox pitching staff this season. 

OFFENSE BAFFLED
Wenatchee has struggled at the plate through its first four games in 2016...the AppleSox have just one extra-base hit and 5 RBI on 7 runs scored...the team is batting .157 (20x127) and has struck out 39 times (tied for second-most with the Bend Elks, and trailing league-leading Victoria [47])...last night, Wenatchee ended a consecutive scoreless inning dryspell at the plate in the ninth inning, when Steven Machtolf picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded HBP...it was the first run Wenatchee had scored since the ninth inning of Saturday’s 6-5 extra-inning loss on a Sheldon Liikala RBI bases-loaded walk...a span of 18 2/3 innings...the last time Wenatchee scored a run not via walk or HBP was on an Evan Douglas RBI single in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game...23 1/3 innings ago.

A theme of multi-run innings continues for the AppleSox in early 2016...Wenatchee has allowed runs in 13 defensive innings this season...in seven of those innings Wenatchee has given up three-or-more runs...two-or-more runs have been surrendered in 10 of the 13 frames.

GETTING THE SERIES EVEN
If the Sox win Wednesday, the series is back even at 1-1...the last time Wenatchee lost two-consecutive series was July 6-11 at home against Bend (0-3) and on the road at Cowlitz (1-2).

DOUBLE DIGITS
Wenatchee has given up 11 runs in each of its last two games...the last time the AppleSox gave up back-to-back double digit run scoring games wasJuly 3 and 4 of 2012...a span of 217 games in between.

THE STREAK

APPLESOX STRICKEN BY TOUGH PITCHING, FALL TO HARBOURCATS

The Wenatchee AppleSox struggled at the plate Tuesday night, being kept off base for 6 2/3 innings and no-hit through 7 innings. 

BOX SCORE

VICTORIA – The Wenatchee AppleSox (0-4), fell to the Victoria HarbourCats (1-3), 11-1 Tuesday night, while the HarbourCats starting pitcher was near-perfect at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria. 

The AppleSox were held without a baserunner for 6 2/3 innings, and hitless through 7 innings, facing Dalton Erb of the HarbourCats. 

Erb received tremendous run support from the HarbourCats in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The HarbourCats scored 10 of their 11 runs over the three frames, and chased Sox starter Tyler Burch from the game, who appeared to leave due to some sort of injury. 

After 3 2/3 innings, it was 3-0 HarbourCats when Nick Hoefling made his AppleSox debut in relief of the injured Burch. A 2-RBI single off of the second base bag made it 5-0 HarbourCats, and Victoria never looked back. 

Cody Snider went 3-for-5 with a single, home run and double. He drove in three runs and stole two bases in the game. 

Victoria added two more in the fourth and three more in the fifth, for a 10-0 lead after five innings. 

It was all the help Erb needed, as he retired the first 20 batters faced, Tuesday. Ryan Murkle worked a 2-out walk off of Erb in the seventh inning to break up a perfect game, and Steven Machtolf started the eighth inning with a hard-hit single to right center field to break up Erb’s no-hit bid. 

Casey Legumina threw in relief along with Hoefling. Legumina struck out three batters during his inning of work, but also surrendered the HarbourCat’s 11th run. 

Wenatchee’s lone offensive bright spot came in the ninth inning. Royfel Granda and Jeremy Ydens got their first hits of 2016 during the frame. A walk of Ryan Murkle set up a bases loaded situation in which Wenatchee scored a run off of HarbourCat reliever Nick Wojtysiak. Steven Machtolf ended a streak of 18 2/3 scoreless innings dating back to the tenth inning of Saturday night’s game, and delivered the game’s only RBI for Wenatchee on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. 

Erb went eight innings, giving up just one walk, and tossing 13 strikeouts. Wojtysiak added a strikeout to drive the game total to 14 for Victoria.

WENATCHEE – A tough weekend for the Wenatchee AppleSox (0-3), ended in a disappointing 11-0 loss to the Yakima Valley Pippins (3-0), Sunday night...After retiring the Pippins in order in the second inning, Sox starter Grady Miller ran into some trouble in the third inning...three runs came to score on five-consecutive Pippin hits and a sacrifice fly...Miller retired the side in each of the fourth and fifth innings, before once again falling in hot water in the sixth against the Pippins...six straight hits in the sixth, after the leadoff runner was picked off, led to four more runs scoring and Yakima Valley led 7-0...Miceal Taylor pitched in relief of Miller and got the final two outs in the inning...he later allowed a run in the seventh on Chris Ceballos’ third double of the game...Ceballos finished with 3 RBI...in the eighth, Taylor retired the Pippins in order...the ninth inning led to three more runs scoring for the Pippins. Four-consecutive hits sparked the run scoring in the inning. Zac Bonneau hammered home the final hit of Yakima Valley’s 18...Wenatchee struggled offensively, only tallying four hits. Parker Price did reach base via a hit for a third-straight night, but Ryan Garcia controlled the Sox for six innings, only allowing three hits...Connor Lau and Derek Atlee were the Pippin relievers, and they shut Wenatchee down, only allowing one hit the rest of the way.

SHUTOUT LOSS
The AppleSox were shut out Sunday night for the first time since June 9, 2015...a WCL season-opening series at Walla Walla.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD
The AppleSox retired the visiting side in order nine times over the first three games, however, in six-of-eight Pippin scoring innings, Wenatchee allowed more than one run (10th inning Saturday, 8th inning Sunday)...on the other hand...Wenatchee had one run-scoring inning of four runs, and two run-scoring innings of just one run.

SOMETHING EXTRA
The AppleSox only have one extra-base hit through the first three games of the 2016 season...the Pippins went for 10 extra-base hits on the other side of the card during the weekend series.

STARTING PITCHING
None of Wenatchee’s first three starting pitchers was able to make it past 5.1 innings, Friday-Sunday...in 15.2 innings pitched, the starters have surrendered 15 runs.
