APPLESOX FALL 5-3, EARN SERIES WIN OVER VICTORIA

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (4-5) long six-game stretch against the Victoria HarbourCats (5-5) is finally over, after the HarbourCats salvaged game three of Wenatchee’s home series, Saturday night by a score of 5-3 at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Jake Garella drove in four of the HarbourCats’ five runs with one swing of the bat in the second inning. His first home run of the season, was a Grand Slam over the right field wall, to give Victoria an early 4-0 lead.

Wenatchee’s starter, Gerald Hein (0-1) settled in nicely after the big fly in the second. Outside of the four hits he allowed in that inning, Hein only gave up two more through seven frames.

Victoria’s starter, Ethan Fox (no-decision), was also stout. He was facing the AppleSox for a second time in the six-game stretch, after allowing four runs his first time out against the AppleSox up in Victoria on the HarbourCats’ home-opening night.

Fox only allowed one hit in the first three innings, and the AppleSox didn’t reach him until the fourth, after leadoff singles in the inning by Evan Johnson and Jalen Garcia. A passed ball set the pair of runners up to score on RBI groundouts for Joel Condreay and Cole McKenzie.

In the fifth, trailing 4-2, Wenatchee squandered the first of two big spots on the night. With the bases loaded, Wenatchee couldn’t cash in. A flyout to right field, after an intentional walk of Johnson left the score at 4-2. Luke Boyd (1-0) got the flyout and earned the win for Victoria over 2 2/3 innings.

The AppleSox had another shot in the seventh down 4-2. With the bases loaded, Condreay came to the plate to face inserted reliever AJ Block, who was the winning pitcher in the HarbourCats’ only win over the AppleSox up in Victoria. Block walked Condreay with the bags full to make it 4-3, but recovered with a strikeout to keep Victoria ahead.

Wenatchee went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

Steen Fredrickson pitched the last two innings, allowing a run after Bryce Bonner collected his third hit of the night for the HarbourCats, in the ninth. Bonner stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

The AppleSox were put down in order in their half of the ninth by Travis Kuhn, who earned a two-inning save.

The AppleSox stay at home as part of a six-game homestand, and face the Yakima Valley Pippins (3-3) at 6:05 p.m. It is the first Spaghetti Sunday of the season. When gates open at 5 p.m., up until first pitch at 6:05 p.m., fans can purchase a heaping plate of spaghetti from the Alley Café, complete with a slice of garlic bread, for $7.50. Collin Maier (1-0) will get the start for Wenatchee.

AppleSox catcher Cody Simmons in the 1937 Wenatchee Chiefs throwback uniform.

The Wenatchee AppleSox are paying tribute to the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Minor League Baseball in the Wenatchee Valley, by wearing throwback 1937 Wenatchee Chief uniforms once per three-game series at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium this year.

The first time the AppleSox will don the new, crisp, whites is Saturday night in the series finale against the Victoria HarbourCats at 7:05 p.m.

The collegiate-summer league (WCL) AppleSox have four uniforms this season, and are wearing the “Chiefs name across their chests once-per-series for the first time in franchise history.

The jerseys will be up for a silent auction on August 3, at the AppleSox regular-season finale against the Corvallis Knights. Fans will be able to bid on the game-worn jerseys, and take home a relic from the 1937 and 2017 baseball seasons in Wenatchee.

The Wenatchee Chiefs were a minor league baseball team that played in the Class B Western International League (1937-1954) and founding member of the Northwest League (1955-65).

The Chiefs utilized Recreation “Rec” Park downtown, and bleacher seat tickets cost only 5 cents for games during the teams’ early years. If you wanted to sit in the grandstand, your ticket was a hefty 40 cents!

The franchise operated for a total of 25 years (the Western International League suspended play for World War II from 1943 through 1945) and was a minor league affiliate for the New York Yankees (1938-40), the Cincinnati Redlegs (1957-58), and the Chicago Cubs (1961-65).

The 1937 replica jerseys were designed by BSN SPORTS.

APPLESOX WIN SERIES BEHIND SEVEN STRONG INNINGS FROM JARROD MOLNAA

Jarrod Molnaa turned in a sterling performance for the AppleSox third-consecutive and series-clinching win.

Jarrod Molnaa turned in a sterling performance for the AppleSox third-consecutive and series-clinching win.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (4-4) defeated the Victoria HarbourCats (4-5) for a third straight night, by a score of 7-6, behind seven strong innings from Jarrod Molnaa, Friday at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Molnaa (1-0) earned the second quality start of the season for the AppleSox, lasting seven innings, allowing only six hits and three runs, two of which came earned. He opened the game by retiring the first 11 HarbourCat batters to face him.

In the second inning, Reagan Teegarden got the AppleSox on the board first with a 2-RBI double that was scorched down the left field line.

The HarbourCats cut into that lead in the fourth, on a Kevin Collard RBI single, following a Teegarden error.

An RBI single for Cole McKenzie, and a fielder’s choice RBI groundout for Dugan Shirer in the fourth gave the AppleSox some short-lived breathing room, 4-1.

Again Victoria came back with a solo home run for Cole Weiss, his first of the season, smashed over the right field wall.

Victoria added one more earned run off of Molnaa in the sixth on an RBI single. Molnaa ended his outing by drawing a 5-4-3 double play in the seventh.

The AppleSox most important insurance runs came in the sixth and the seventh, on an RBI single for Thursday’s hero, Parker Price, and a run-scoring double play made it 6-3.

A balk in the seventh against HarbourCat reliever Chavez Fernander allowed the game’s eventual winning run to score.

Ethan Skuija (0-1) was charged with the loss, and only lasted three innings, while giving up four earned runs.

Victoria mounted a late comeback try in the eighth on a three-error, two-hit inning, to cut the deficit to 7-6.

In the ninth, Matthew Young tried to wrap up his two innings of relief to earn Molnaa the victory, and was off to a steady start, when he retired the first two batters. Back-to-back two-out singles made things interesting, but Young got the win for Molnaa on a lineout to center field in the next at bat.

The AppleSox have now won four of their last five games and are tied atop the WCL North at 4-4. Gerald Hein will look to pitch Wenatchee to a series sweep and fourth-straight win, Saturday, at 7:05 p.m. He faces HarbourCat pitcher Ethan Fox (1-1).

Parker Price delivered the game-winning run for the AppleSox in the bottom of the ninth inning, with a single to left field, Thursday. It was his fourth hit of the night in the AppleSox home-opening victory.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (3-4) walked off the Victoria HarbourCats (4-4), 5-4 on an RBI single to left field. It was Parker Price’s fourth hit of the night, Thursday at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Price smacked an 0-1 pitch from Victoria reliever Greg Casper, in fair down the left field line, to give the AppleSox their first home win of 2017, in as many tries.

The opportunity was set up by two innings of scoreless relief from Connor Leedholm (1-0) in his AppleSox debut. Leedholm retired the HarbourCats in order in each of the eighth and ninth innings, and registered his first strikeout.

Colby Nealy also made his debut for the AppleSox, Thursday. The starter tossed four innings and allowed all three of the runs against him in the second inning. He also struck out two batters.

Last night, the AppleSox first win erased a 10-game losing streak to the Victoria HarbourCats...it also ended a four-game skid in league play, a five-game negative trend on the road, and marked Wenatchee’s 200th franchise road win in 18 seasons.

BIG POP
Adrian Vela smashed Wenatchee’s seventh individual multi-HR game in the team’s WCL history...he and Evan Johnson are the first teammates to accomlish the feat in the same season, and four of the seven multi-HR league performances for the AppleSox have come in the last three seasons...the onslaught of multi-HR games started in Victoria June 26-28 when Evan Douglas smashed a pair over the right field fence at Royal Athletic Park.

BIG INNINGS FROM ‘PEN
The AppleSox are short-staffed in terms of arms, on this road trip...after Matthew Young and tonight’s starter Gerald Hein, each threw one inning back on Opening Night, the AppleSox have averaged a little over 5 2/3 innings per individual relief appearance...Young used 3 1/3 to earn his first save a night ago...the 5 2/3 innings per relief appearance over the last three games out-pitches the starters, who average just under 3 1/3 innings per start.

PACING THE WCL
The AppleSox lead the WCL in home runs, with five, and Vela and Johnson are tied for the league lead with two home runs, each...Johnson’s 6 RBI tie up with HarbourCat Ethan Lopez for best in the WCL...Jarrod Molnaa is tied for second in the WCL with 10 strikeouts.

CONGRATS TO SKIP
Kyle Krustangel picked up his first win of his AppleSox head coaching career last night.

NOT A LOT IN THE NORTH
Last night the AppleSox and the Kelowna Falcons were the only two teams who were able to win in the WCL North Division...Victoria, Walla Walla, Bellingham, and Port Angeles all were on the wrong end of Monday scores.

STRONG OFFENSE
Wenatchee’s 9 runs, 13 hits, four extra-base hits, and three home runs were all season highs...the pitching staff also held its lowest runs against total, at four.

VICTORIA, B.C – The Wenatchee AppleSox (1-3) bats came alive in a 9-4 victory over the Victoria HarbourCats (3-2), in the ‘Cats’ 2017 home-opener at Royal Athletic Park, Monday. Adrian Vela homered twice in the game, and Cody Simmons also left the yard, in Wenatchee’s most prolific offensive game of the season.

Collin Maier (1-0) was solid through the first three innings. He didn’t surrender a hit in the opening three frames, and ended up lasting 5.2 innings while allowing just two runs. Matthew Young fired the remaining 3.1 innings to get Wenatchee and head coach Kyle Krustangel their first wins of the season.

Joel Condreay singled in a run in the fourth inning, to open the scoring for the AppleSox. Wenatchee native Cody Simmons followed up the hit with the first home run of his college career. He hit his home run over the left field fence, just below the scoreboard.

Reigning WCL Player of the Week, Evan Johnson smashed home a 2-RBI single in the fifth off of Ethan Fox (0-1), after the HarbourCats cut the AppleSox 3-0 lead to a 3-2 margin in the fourth.

Adrian Vela followed up Johnson’s single with a two-run home run to left field, to put Wenatchee up, 7-2.

The score held until Victoria plated two more runs in the seventh inning off of Young. Adrian Vela creamed his second home run in the ninth inning, clearing the foul pole in left field on a towering shot.

After Johnson hit two home runs Saturday, he and Vela are now the first two AppleSox players to have multi-home run games in the same season. Vela joins five other AppleSox in the multi-home run game club, and Monday’s performance marked the seventh time it has occurred in AppleSox history.

The AppleSox play the second game of the series, Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. AJ Block (0-0) will start for the HarbourCats, while the AppleSox will send Hugh Smith (0-0) to the mound.

The Wenatchee AppleSox wrap up the series at Victoria, Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. Then, the AppleSox play their home opener in Wenatchee Thursday, June 8 in a continuation of the series against Victoria. For more information, fans can visit www.applesox.com.

BACK FOR MORE
After opening their 2016 road schedule at Victoria, the AppleSox are the HarbourCats Home Opening Night opponent for the second time in as many years...the AppleSox will try to flip the script this time around, after being beaten 11-1 in front of a WCL-record crowd of 5,133...the HarbourCats featured tall right-hander Dalton Erb, who threw eight one-hit innings, and had a Perfect Game bid broken up in the eighth inning by leadoff batter Steven Machtolf...his younger brother, Jack Machtolf, plays for the AppleSox this year...Erb was drafted in the 2016 MLB Draft after his first start, and signed a professional contract...ending his brief summer with the HarbourCats.

FREE BASES AND BASEBALL...
Last night, the Sweets and AppleSox issued a total of 14 walks...7 per side...Walla Walla and Wenatchee also plunked three total batters...another five combined errors allowed a total of 22 free bases for the two teams...both left 14 runners on...Wenatchee was 2-13 wRISP and Walla Walla finished 3-15, in a clunky contest.

ALL-TIME IN EXTRAS
The 12-inning affair last night was the 68th extra-inning game in AppleSox history...Wenatchee is now an even 34-34 in games that last past the regular nine.

WALKOFFS
Last night marked the first lost lead for a loss this season, and was also the first walkoff for the AppleSox or their opposition...did you know, the AppleSox haven’t had a walkoff hit since 2014, when temporary catcher Taylor Johnson walked off the Kitsap BlueJackets in back-to-back games June 10 and 11 at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium...those ended up being the last two games of Johnson’s collegiate career, as he did not play his next available season at George Fox.

SAVVY SOX
Wenatchee’s 37-man preseason roster (7 temporary players) is made up of 20 players entering their junior, senior, or redshirt-senior seasons of college baseball in 2018...only six members of the roster have yet to spend time on a college campus.

JOHNSON WINS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER STELLAR WEEKEND

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The first WCL Player of the Week honor (June 1-4) went to AppleSox outfielder, Evan Johnson, the league announced, Monday. Adam McKillican from Victoria took home the title of WCL Pitcher of the Week.

Johnson went 5-for-12 (.417) in the AppleSox season-opening series against the Walla Walla Sweets, and clubbed two home runs to left field in Wenatchee’s 5-4, loss Saturday.

All four of his RBI came by way of the home runs, and Johnson is currently riding a three-game hitting streak.

His multi-home run performance was just the sixth in the all-time history of the AppleSox, and the third in as many years. Four other AppleSox players have hit two home runs in a game, and one of those players accomplished the feat twice.

Johnson also stole a base on the weekend.

The Wenatchee AppleSox will head to Victoria for a three-game series, June 5-7. All three first pitches are at 6:35 p.m. The AppleSox play their home opener in Wenatchee Thursday, June 8 against Victoria. For more information, fans can visit www.applesox.com.

APPLESOX STUNNED IN EXTRA-INNING HEARTBREAKER, SWEPT AT WALLA WALLA

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – In a game featuring three ties and four lead changes, the Wenatchee AppleSox (0-3), fell 7-6 to the Walla Walla Sweets (3-0), in a 12-inning affair at Borleske Stadium. The win capped a series sweep for the Sweets, Sunday.

The back-and-forth game lacked rhythm most of the afternoon. The Sweets scored first, in the opening inning, following two, two-out walks and a single.

The AppleSox answered back in the third with an RBI groundout for Reagan Teegarden. Then, Wenatchee took its first lead of 2017 in the fourth inning on a Dugan Shirer fielder’s choice, followed by Parker Price reaching base on a dropped third strike, which also allowed a third AppleSox run to score.

Walla Walla erased the AppleSox lead in the fifth, chasing Gerald Hein (0-1) with one out and the bases loaded. Hunter Boyd entered and walked in a run. A fielder’s choice and wild pitch scored the other two runs, and the Sweets took a 4-3 advantage.

Boyd stayed on for the AppleSox in relief and fired scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth. He struck out four batters, to add to Hein’s nine strikeouts on the day.

Errors were critical in the early innings for both teams. The AppleSox committed three, while Walla Walla suffered two. The miscues set up run-scoring opportunities.

Wenatchee tied the game in the fourth inning on an Alex Gonzales double that brought home Evan Johnson. Later in the inning, Dugan Shirer also connected on a double in the inning to plate two more runs and a 6-4 AppleSox lead.

Shirer went 3-for-5 with a run scored, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Walla Walla got to Wenatchee for a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings. Boyd pitched the AppleSox through the 10th and 11th innings, but Wenatchee was unable to plate a go-ahead run.

In the 12th, Walla Walla won the game with a base hit off of Steen Fredrickson (0-1). Vinny Capra, the Sweets’ leadoff hitter, drove in the game winning run.

Wenatchee heads to Victoria (3-1) to continue it’s lone six-game road trip of 2017. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. tomorrow from Royal Athletic Park. The pitching matchup pits right-hander Collin Maier (0-0) up against HarbourCat righty Ethan Fox (0-0).

The Wenatchee AppleSox will head to Victoria for a three-game series, June 5-7. The AppleSox play their home opener in Wenatchee Thursday, June 8 against Victoria. For more information, fans can visit www.applesox.com.

EVAN JOHNSON BLASTS TWO HOME RUNS, SOX BEATEN BY ONE

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Evan Johnson smashed two home runs for the Wenatchee AppleSox (0-2), but the Walla Walla Sweets (2-0), scored enough early runs to hold on for a 5-4 win at Borleske Stadium.

Johnson’s first home run, was a solo shot over the hand-operated scoreboard in left field. The second home run of the night, a three-run shot, came in the ninth inning and trimmed the 5-1 deficit. It was also to left field, this time clearing the 353-foot marker in left field.

The AppleSox were put in a tough spot early when starter Keegan Romig (0-1) had to exit the game with an apparent arm injury. He left in the first inning with two outs and runners at second and third.

Having to take over off the bench, Jarrod Molnaa had trouble settling in. A wild pitch brought home a run and a two-run home run for Jake Suddleson made it 3-0, Sweets after an inning.

Walla Walla added runs in the fourth and fifth, for the 5-1 lead.

After Romig’s early exit, Molnaa lasted the rest of the game and settled into a nice rhythm. The right-hander struck out 10 batters, becoming the first AppleSox pitcher to do so since CJ Gettman, June 4, 2015.

Scott Parker (1-0) got the win for Walla Walla, tossing five two-hit innings. Matt Amrhein came on to get the save for Wenatchee, by retiring the last two AppleSox batters to preserve the 5-4 victory.

Game three is Sunday at 1:05 p.m. In a battle of left-handers, the AppleSox Gerald Hein (0-0) will face the Sweets’ Haydn King (0-0).
