Four Former Players Crack MLB Opening Day Rosters

Four former Wenatchee AppleSox players have appeared on MLB rosters for the start of the 2024 season, which begins today, Mar. 28. 

Griffin Canning, Marco Gonzales, Drew Rasmussen and Michael Toglia will all begin the new season with their major-league ballclub. 

Canning, a 2020 Gold Glove winner and 2014 AppleSox alum, will pitch for the Los Angeles Angels for a fifth season. 

Gonzales, a 2010 West Coast League champion, opens up his 10th season in the big leagues with his third organization, the Pittsburgh Pirates, after an offseason trade. 

Rasmussen, a righty with the Sox in 2014, has a 2.97 ERA over his first four MLB seasons and looks to build off it in his fourth season with the Tampa Bay Rays. 

Toglia, the 2016 WCL MVP, cracked the Colorado Rockies Opening Day Roster for the first time in his third MLB season.

The 2024 WCL season begins on May 31 as the AppleSox host the Port Angeles Lefties at 6:25 p.m. at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. The AppleSox have 31 home games and play until mid-August. The franchise’s five West Coast League championships are second-most in league history and head coach Mitch Darlington’s club set single-season franchise records for walks drawn, home record, home winning streak, sweeps and home runs hit in a single game in 2023.
