Applesox Blank Pippins 10-0

Alec Johnson gave up just two hits as the starter and struck out six in five scoreless innings of work, and the offense picked up 10 runs to give the Applesox their first win of the season 10-0 over Yakima Valley.

Wenatchee (1-1) pitchers did not walk a single batter, with Carson Boesel earning a hold out of the ‘pen tossing three innings giving up just one hit with two strikeouts. Trevor Young closed it out in the 9th giving up just one hit.

Noah Fields went 2-4 with three RBI, Colby Holmdahl went 3-5, while Brady Bean continued his hot start with a 2-4 effort, including a pair of doubles and an RBI.

The win marked manager Mitch Darlington’s 100th as an Applesox skipper, becoming just the second manager in Applesox history to do so.

Bean started it off in the first with a double down the right field line. Jack McWilliams brought him home on an RBI single. With the bases loaded, Nate Gray Jr walked home a run to make it 2-0.

Payton Smith led off the 2nd with a single, and he scored on a Bean RBI double in the left-center field gap to make it 3-0 Wenatchee. Bean scored when Jake Sanko hit a ground ball to third, where Jacob Brooks sailed the throw and gave the ‘Sox a 4-0 lead.

To the fifth, where Gunnar Penzkover picked up a two out single, and Jack Barker brought him home with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Another run scorer in the sixth when Fields doubled to lead off the inning, Holmdahl singled, and an error allowed Fields to score to make it 6-0.

Three more runs scored in the 7th, part of four hits in a row. Barker singled, followed by a Sanko double, with a two-run Fields single. Fields eventually scored on a failed pickoff attempt to give Wenatchee a 9-0 lead.

Fields hit a sacrifice fly in the 8th to give the Sox a 10-0 lead.

Wenatchee searches for a series win in the series finale Sunday with Gesa Credit Union sponsoring Cuffs and Axes at noon. Your ticket to tomorrow’s 5:35 game gets you into the Cuffs and Axes game, while the Applesox celebrate local heroes at the game against Yakima Valley.

Applesox Come Up Short on Opening Night

Brady Bean gathered three hits for the Applesox, but the Yakima Valley Pippins took home the win on Opening Night 5-1.

Wenatchee (0-1) fell behind early with starter Mitch Haythorn (0-1) on the mound. Haythorn tossed three innings giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits. He struck out six hitters and, at one point, struck out five in a row. The Applesox committed four errors, and hit into three double plays.

Yakima Valley (1-0) starter Ty Pangborn (1-0) tossed five innings giving up one run on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Haythorn got into some trouble to start off the first with back-to-back full count walks, while Finley Spicer drove both walks in with a two-run double to the left-center field gap to make it 2-0.

The Pippins continued their momentum in the 3rd. Dillon Anderson led off the inning with a single and stole second and third. He scored on a RBI double by Jacob Brooks. Kyle Bittner hit a ball to second, where Noah Fields committed a throwing error and allowed another runner to score and give Yakima Valley a 4-0 lead.

Wenatchee picked up a run on a Bean RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 3rd to make it a 4-1 game.

With Joe Thorton on the mound, Bittner hit a dribbler back to the mound and Thornton threw the ball a bit high allowing Bittner to reach. Bittner stole second and came home on an RBI single by Ethan Buckley.

Thornton tossed three innings giving up just one run unearned on a hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Easten Brooks and Alec Ammerman combined for three scoreless innings in relief.

Head Coach Mitch Darlington said after the game the Applesox just could not get the big hit when it counted, as all 10 of Wenatchee’s hits came on singles. He added the four errors and three double plays didn’t help matters.

The Applesox take on the Pippins for game two of the three-game series at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.

AppleSox Add Four Players From Grand Canyon

AppleSox head coach Mitch Darlington announced on Thursday the addition of four players to the 2025 roster. Alec Ammerman, Ross Clark, Gunnar Penzkover and Jake Sanko will join this summer's team. All of them come from Grand Canyon University, whom the AppleSox had three players from last season in Garrett Ahern, Carson Ohland and Cannon Peery.

Ammerman will return to his home state to pitch this summer after his freshman year at Grand Canyon. He helped Richland High School earn the 2024 4A State Championship while also being part of a 28-0 season. The right-handed pitcher earned Mid-Columbia Conference Pitcher of the Year and all-conference first team honors as a senior while also garnering 4A state honors.

The Richland native comes to the AppleSox with a connection to the Apple Capital of the World already as his father played baseball at Wenatchee Valley College from 1996-97 before going on to play at Central Washington.

Clark is a freshman right-handed pitcher at Grand Canyon. He graduated from Orange Lutheran High School last spring after a decorated career. Clark earned All-California Interscholastic Federation honors, All-Orange County honors, First-Team Trinity League honors, Trinity League Pitcher of the Year and CIF State Champion. Darlington Reveals First Nine Members of 2025 Roster

AppleSox head coach Mitch Darlington announced on Wednesday the addition of the first nine members of the 2025 roster, the 25th in franchise history. Brady Bean, Carson Boesel, Braiden Boyd, Evan Cloyd, Jack Haferkamp, Kanoa Morisaki, Karsten Sweum, Joe Thornton and Reese Vassar return to Wenatchee after appearing on last summer’s roster for the 2024 WCL North Division Champions.

Bean comes back to the AppleSox on a 10-game contract after appearing in 14 regular-season games and two postseason contests. He made 11 starts at second base after a strong start to the summer with the Medicine Hat Mavericks of the Western Canadian Baseball League.

The Kennewick native is a junior at Portland, looking to build off a strong sophomore season when he slashed .321/.400/.511 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 38 games. Bean began his collegiate career at Saint Martin’s in 2022, where he batted .384 with 10 doubles and 22 RBI in 42 games.

Boesel shined out of the back of the bullpen, recording a 2.59 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 17.1 innings in 10 relief outings last summer. He tossed two-or-more innings five times, including in each of his first three outings of the summer.

The Malott native is a sophomore at Spokane Falls and looking to make a decision on a four-year university soon. Boesel was 5-1 with a 5.97 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 28.2 innings in 16 relief appearances in 2024 but has started both of the games that he’s pitching in this spring. His fastball topped at 91 miles per hour last summer but was clocked at 96 miles per hour in December.

Boyd will pitch for a fourth straight summer with the AppleSox in 2025. He got his first taste of college baseball by pitching in a non-league for Wenatchee in 2022 prior to his senior year at Chelan High School and went on to lead the AppleSox in appearances (13) last summer. Boyd fired the second-most innings (33.2) of any Wenatchee pitcher and was fourth in strikeouts (21). The southpaw tied for the AppleSox’ team lead with three saves in 2023 and recorded a 3.57 ERA in nine games.

The Chelan native redshirted at Washington State in 2024 and transferred to Spokane Falls this spring. Boyd earned Caribou Trail League First Team honors from 2022-23 and was CTL Player of the Year in 2022. He helped lead the Goats to fourth place at the 1A State Tournament in 2022. Boyd has 12 strikeouts to just four walks and a 2.89 ERA over his first 9.1 innings of the 2025 season.

Cloyd returns for his second season with the AppleSox after leading the team with 21 starts at first base last season. He joined the AppleSox in late June and reached base safely in each of the first 25 games that he started. Cloyd slashed .343/.466/.552 in July and finished the season tied for fifth on the team in RBI (23) and seventh in walks (18).

The Bakersfield, Calif. native is in his first season at Cal State Bakersfield after playing two seasons at Cal Poly. Cloyd transferred after combining to hit .243 with four home runs and 26 RBI with the Mustangs from 2023-24. He is a WCL veteran with a combined 93 regular-season games over the last three summers, previously suiting up for the Portland Pickles from 2022-23.

Haferkamp only appeared in five games in league play with only three starts in that time but made the most of an opportunity July 21 when he drove in three runs, including delivering a pinch-hit go-ahead 2-RBI double in an eventual 10-8 victory vs. Yakima Valley. Haferkamp also hit a home run in non-league play against the CCL Showcase team July 14.

The Carlsbad, Calif. Native is a freshman at UC Santa Barbara after a highly-acclaimed prep career. Haferkamp graduated from Santa Fe Christian High School last spring and ended with a bang, slashing .360/.525/.719 with 17 extra-base hits in 31 games as a senior. He played in the 2023 Dick’s Sporting Goods Perfect Game All-American Classic at Chase Field in Arizona and appeared on SB Live’s 2024 California preseason high school baseball all-state team.

Perhaps the most versatile player in college baseball will lend his capabilities to the AppleSox again in 2025. Morisaki was an in-season signing at the start of July to help shore up the AppleSox’ shortstop void once Elijah Pelayo departed at the end of June after starting in each of the first 27 games of the season. Morisaki went on to make 10 starts at shortstop, seven at catcher and two relief appearances on the mound while also switch-hitting.

The Honolulu native is a sophomore at Cal State Bakersfield after appearing in 13 games a freshman in 2024. Morisaki graduated from Kaiser High School in 2023 and earned First Team All-State and district player of the year honors as a senior.

Sweum displayed impressive swing-and-miss stuff in 2024, punching out 12 hitters in 12.2 innings over six outings. He started three of those games, including firing four scoreless innings at Bend in the final game of the regular season. Sweum struck out three and only allowed two hits in that game.

The Snohomish native is in his freshman campaign at Gonzaga. He graduated from Glacier Park High School last spring and earned 2024 First Team All-WESCO 4A pitcher and utility player honors as well as co-MVP. Sweum was also a 2022-23 Northwest Scout Games selection and a 2023 Area Code selection by the Kansas City Royals.

Thornton joined the AppleSox late in 2024 and pitched in two regular-season games. He battled an arm injury in between outings on July 21 and Aug. 7 but recovered to be available for the postseason. Thornton did not allow any runs in two different scoreless outings of two innings apiece.

The Tonasket native redshirted at Spokane Falls last spring but has shined as a two-way player this spring. He only pitched for the AppleSox last summer but is hitting .263 through 12 games while not allowing any runs in his first two games on the bump.

After being teammates with his older brother last season, Reese will now be on a team that Quincy coaches. Vassar joined the team in early August and started two games at shortstop. His older brother is the AppleSox’ all-time leader in strikeouts (125) and innings (131.2) and is about to begin his first season as the team’s pitching coach.

The Brewster native played in 42 games as a freshman at Spokane Falls last spring. Vassar recorded a .348 on-base percentage and drove in 20 runs. He slashed .472/.597/.584 in 18 games as a senior at Brewster High School in 2023.

The AppleSox open up their 25th season May 30 when they face the Yakima Valley Pippins at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. The 2025 season consists of 30 home games and concludes in mid-August. Ticket packages, including season tickets for as low as $150 and 10-game flex packs for $65, are available for purchase at applesox.com/season-tickets

Fifty-nine of the 65 players have been coached by Mitch Darlington, who will begin his fourth season with the AppleSox in 2025 after winning a share of the 2024 WCL Head Coach of the Year honor.

Perhaps no former AppleSox player in college baseball will attract more attention this season than Aiva Arquette, a shortstop on the 2022 AppleSox. Arquette, a junior at Oregon State, has racked up a plethora of preseason honors that include being named a 2025 Perfect Game College Preseason All-American First Team Infielder, a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-American, MLB Pipeline’s seventh-best 2025 MLB Draft prospect and a 2025 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List member.

Arquette was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft in the midst of a standout summer with the AppleSox. He hit .335 in 39 games and collected a team-high 39 RBI, a figure that also put him tied for the fourth-most in the WCL. The Kailua, Hawaii native spent two seasons at Washington before transferring to Oregon State last fall. He made the All-Pac-12 Team and Pac-12 All Defense Team as a sophomore and hit .325 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 48 games.

Several AppleSox alums are playing in their fifth-year of eligibility this spring, thanks to waivers being granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Enzo Apodaca (2021-22) returns to Baylor after leading the Bears in batting average (.333), hits (70) and RIB (42) in 2024. Apodaca is the AppleSox’ all-time leader in career walks (64) and is tied for third in steals (21). Jackson Van De Brake (2021) will compete in his third year at North Carolina and look to lead the Tar Heels back to the NCAA Tournament for a seventh straight time.

The reigning WCL batting champion Aidan Dougherty joins this list after heading to UCONN following a dominant 2024 with Linn-Benton and then the AppleSox. Dougherty captured an NWAC Championship while also being named NWAC Tournament MVP, First Team All-NWAC and NWAC South Region MVP. He led the entire NWAC with a .371 batting average in 43 games before going on to lead the WCL in the same category with a .380 mark in 44 games. Dougherty also earned All-WCL First Team honors by swimming 21 bags, the third-most in AppleSox single-season history.

Two other All-WCL recipients return to their Division-I universities in Max Hartman and Jonathan Fitz. Hartman is back at Washington State after earning All-WCL Second Team honors with the AppleSox last summer. He was a start-to-finish player with the AppleSox, appearing in a team-high 51 of a possible 54 games. Hartman also was a 2024 All-Star and tied Portland’s Tanner Griffith for the most runs in the WCL (51) while also tying for the fifth-most hits (64), the seventh-most at-bats (196) and the ninth-best on-base percentage (.440). Fitz led all AppleSox catchers with 22 starts before also starting all five postseason games. The incoming sophomore at San Diego tied for fifth on the team with 23 RBI and drew 21 walks, good for fourth-most. Including the postseason, Fitz hit .304 over his final 28 games. The 2024 WCL All-Star recorded six multi-hit games and a .982 fielding percentage.

Vassar Hired As Pitching Coach

The Wenatchee AppleSox have announced that the franchise’s all-time leader in strikeouts, Quincy Vassar, has been hired as the team’s pitching coach for the 2025 season.

Vassar will join second-year coach Xander Orejudos as assistants on head coach Mitch Darlington’s staff. Darlington, the reigning co-WCL Head Coach of the Year, is entering his fourth campaign with Wenatchee.

“I am thrilled to announce the addition of Quincy Vassar to the AppleSox coaching staff in 2025,” Darlington said. “Quincy’s passion for ApppleSox baseball, his ability to lead and his mind for the game will make him a huge addition to our staff. Quincy has cemented himself in AppleSox history as a player and I expect the same level of success to carry over for him as a coach.”

Vassar pitched each of the last three seasons for the AppleSox, logging a franchise-record 131.2 innings over 28 games. The southpaw posted a 3.90 ERA with a franchise-best 125 strikeouts. He tossed at least five innings in 17-of-25 starts.

The Brewster native also made three postseason appearances with the AppleSox, including two of the more impressive starts in recent AppleSox playoff history. He helped Wenatchee finish off a series sweep of Kamloops in 2022 with eight strikeouts and one unearned in seven innings in Game 2 of the North Division Series. Two years and one day later he shoved again in Game 2 of the North Division Series, this time tossing a complete game with eight strikeouts and one run vs. Victoria to keep the AppleSox’ season alive.

“I’m very excited to be joining the coaching staff in Wenatchee,” Vassar said. “The AppleSox have been a big part of my baseball career and I am looking forward to helping athletes make it a part of their own story as the new pitching coach. I couldn’t be more proud to have played for Mitch and now have the chance to work with him and Xander to bring the next championship back to Wenatchee. AppleSox arm farm incoming Summer 2025.”

Vassar saved his best work for his final summer of eligibility with the AppleSox, earning All-WCL Second Team honors in 2024. His 2.92 ERA was the fourth-best among qualified WCL pitchers and his 49.1 innings were sixth-most. The graduate senior at Vanguard tossed two complete games, first with an eight-inning and four-strikeout effort June 29 at Bellingham followed by a nine-inning effort in the playoffs. Postseason included, Vassar tossed at least five innings in seven-of-10 starts. One of those three that he didn’t came when the 2024 WCL All-Star started on three days' rest for a beleaguered AppleSox pitching staff June 9. The Brewster native only allowed two runs over his final 18 innings of the regular season, spanning four games.

Vassar fills the spot of Mike Callia, who departs due to an expanded role at Lower Columbia College. Callia’s staff recorded a 3.35 team ERA in 2023, good for fifth-best in the WCL, en route to the team going 27-17. Five AppleSox pitchers earned All-WCL honors in 2023 and then two more were recognized in 2024 for the WCL runners-up.

The 2025 AppleSox schedule will be released next month. It represents the 25th season in franchise history. Stay tuned to applesox.com and westcoastleague.com. Season tickets and other ticket packages can be purchased today at applesox.com/season-tickets.
